GENERAL DESCRIPTIONTHE SEMINOLE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE IS
OFFERING A $5,000 HIRING INCENTIVE FOR CERTIFIED CORRECTIONS
OFFICERS WITH AT LEAST 3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE!*The Seminole County
Sheriff's Office is now accepting pre-screen questionnaires for the
position of EXPERIENCED DETENTION DEPUTY. All applicants must
possess a State of Florida Certificate of Completion and/or
Certification of Compliance, but are not required to have any prior
work experience in the field of Corrections. To be eligible for the
Hiring Incentive, must have at least three (3) years of experience
as a certified corrections officer and be currently serving in a
certified corrections capacity.The position of Detention Deputy
performs generalized corrections work in the care, custody, control
and re-entry of sentenced and non-sentenced inmates at the John E.
Polk Correctional Facility.The starting annual base salary is
$50,019.32 ($22.37 per hour), plus the potential for additional
holiday pay up to $2,750 for those employees who work twelve (12)
hour shifts. The Sheriff's Office offers a competitive benefits
package including retirement benefits under the Florida Retirement
System, paid medical/dental/life insurance, generous leave accrual,
wellness benefits, and education incentives and assistance. Each

Probationary PeriodTYPICAL DUTIESNote: Listed functions, duties,
responsibilities and skills is not intended to be all-inclusive and

of the Sheriff's Office.A Detention Deputy is a uniformed officer
who is responsible for the care, custody, control and re-entry of
sentenced and non-sentenced inmates. As a detention deputy, your
role includes helping provide offenders with the tools necessary to
become law abiding citizens upon release. Detention Deputies
maintain a consistent routine and demeanor while supervising
offenders.Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring the safety and security of inmates
- Supervising inmates to prevent altercations
- Maintaining accurate count and current location of all
inmates
- Communicate effectively and coherently with other officers and
inmates
- Demonstrate communications skills in court and other formal
settings
- Ensure the cleanliness of the area of assigned
responsibility
- Perform crisis intervention functions to include counseling,
suicide prevention, recognizing abnormal behavior, and taking
appropriate action
- Maintains detailed documentationDUAL CERTIFIEDDetention
Deputies that are sworn in as Dual Certified will be required to
facilitate any necessary arrests or detainment of individuals
within the scope of their job or specialized position. May be
required to investigate crimes committed within a Seminole County
Sheriff's Office Facility. This includes the John E. Polk
correctional facility, Courthouses, Juvenile Facilities and
Seminole County Probation facilities. If being utilized on a
specialized enforcement team than the Dual Certified Detention
Deputy may make lawful arrests and or detentions during the
operational need only.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED
- A citizen of the United States
- 21 years of age
- Must not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor
involving perjury or false statement, nor have received a
dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United
States
- Must possess and maintain valid Florida Driver's License
- All applicants must possess a State of Florida Certificate of
Completion and/or Certification of Compliance, but are NOT required
to have any prior work experience in the field of Corrections
- All applicants will be required to take a Physical Abilities
Test (P.A.T.), Civil Service written examination, and Firearms
qualification. Applicants must score at least 70% on the Civil
Service examination in each of the four (4) sections (math, reading
comprehension, grammar, and report writing) and must pass the
firearms qualification test with a score of 32 out of 40KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, ABILITIES & OTHER
- Regular and prompt attendance is mandatory in the performance
of an employee's duties for this position, to include scheduled
work hours, and required training activities, calls for mandatory
overtime needs and calls for service during times of an
emergency
- Ability to utilize effective communication skills both verbally
and in writing
- Knowledge of Florida Model Jail Standards and Sheriff's Office
rules and regulations as applied to correctional work
- Knowledge of the application of modern correctional principles
and practices

mannerWORKING CONDITIONSThe work environment is mostly within the
confined setting of the John E. Polk Correctional Facility,
Seminole County Juvenile Facility or the Seminole County Court
System. This position generally works a shift (days or nights) with

conditionsSuccessful applicants will be required to complete and
submit an entire employment application, which will be provided to
the applicant by the Human Resources Division. The applicant will
then submit to a thorough background investigation, which includes,
but not limited to, past employment/education verification, driver
license review, credit history, prior drug use history,
arrest/conviction record, and computerized voice stress analysis
(CVSA) testing. A certified examiner administers the CVSA with
questions addressing illegal drug use and general questions of
honesty and criminal history. Any dishonesty or deception on the
Pre-Screen Questionnaire or Employment Application will disqualify
your application.The background investigation process may take 3-6
months depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background.
Applicants selected for employment will be provided a conditional
offer and required to submit to a medical examination with drug
screening.Candidates must also comply with the Agency's current
Tattoo and Body Ornamentation Policy. A copy of General Order 28 -
Dress and Appearance can be accessed here. An applicant's tattoos
and body ornamentation must be disclosed at the time of application
and will be documented as part of the agency's review process, even
if otherwise meeting the Agency's policy.Applicants not selected
